When the foothill heat finally breaks, most yards get ignored until spring. That’s a mistake. Fall is when a few hours of work — or one call to a crew — sets up everything your landscape does next year. Here are the five tasks that matter most in Calaveras and Tuolumne counties.
1. Aerate and overseed your lawn
Summer foot traffic and foothill clay compact the soil until roots can’t breathe. Core aeration opens it back up, and overseeding fills the thin spots while soil is still warm and fall moisture helps seed germinate. By spring, you’ll see the difference.
2. Give your lawn its fall feeding
Of all the fertilizer applications in a year, the fall one does the most work. It feeds root growth and stores energy over winter, so your lawn greens up faster and thicker when spring arrives — with fewer weeds competing.
3. Plant trees and shrubs now
Warm soil with cool air is the best root-growing combination there is. Trees and shrubs planted in fall spend the winter building roots instead of fighting heat, and they’ll head into their first summer already established.
4. Clean up beds and refresh mulch
Leaves and spent plants left in beds shelter pests and disease through winter. A thorough clean-up, a trim-back of overgrowth and a fresh layer of mulch leave beds tidy, insulated and ready for spring growth.
5. Get your irrigation ready for winter
Before the first hard freeze, drain exposed lines, shut down zones that won’t run and check the controller settings. A cracked pipe discovered in March is a repair bill; the same pipe drained in November costs nothing.
Short on weekends? Every one of these is part of our seasonal clean-up and maintenance work — and fall is exactly when our schedule still has room.
